Research concept — simulated data — not for clinical use
Pathscription Maternity · research / future workflow

Nothing important should be missed because a maternity unit is busy.

Pathscription Maternity explores how closed-loop workflow orchestration could help ensure safety-critical actions, clinical concerns and women’s requests are seen, owned, reviewed and completed.

Safe maternity care does not end when mother and baby are physically stable. Pathscription Maternity explores how physical care, patient concerns, emotional wellbeing and recovery support could be managed as one continuous, accountable workflow.

No concern without a response.
No safety-critical task without an owner.

A referral is not completion. A conversation is not completion. An intention is not completion. Pathscription follows the workflow until the next responsible action is clear.

Unit workloadSimulated status: HIGH
  • 4 clinical actions due in next 15 minutes
  • 2 senior reviews outstanding
  • 1 patient concern awaiting acknowledgement
  • 1 safety-critical action overdue

Operational risk signal

Several time-sensitive actions are competing for limited team capacity.

Workflow and capacity signal only. This is not a prediction of clinical deterioration and is not clinically validated.

Being recorded is not the same as being heard. A concern is only closed when somebody acknowledges it, responds and comes back to the patient.

PATIENT-APPROVED SUMMARY

Trauma-informed care plan active

Important context

Patient describes previous birth as severely traumatic.

Communication preference

Repeatedly recounting the previous experience is distressing.

Please

  • Review existing care context before asking patient to repeat history
  • Explain procedures before beginning where circumstances allow
  • Explain significant changes to the agreed plan
  • Give patient an opportunity to ask questions
  • Check understanding
  • Keep existing birth preferences visible

“Please review my existing care context before asking me to explain my previous experience again.”This does not prevent clinically necessary questions. It asks that existing information is read first.

Operational risk signal

Potential capacity conflict detected

Several time-sensitive actions are competing for limited team capacity.

Conceptual only. Pathscription could combine workflow demand with staffing and acuity information to help teams identify where important work is at risk of delay. This is an operational risk signal, not a prediction of clinical deterioration. This functionality would require clinical validation and integration with approved staffing and maternity systems.

Safety escalation — conceptual

A task stays visible until it is completed

  1. Action created
  2. Responsible clinician notified
  3. Acknowledgement required
  4. Still outstanding

Escalation rules would be clinically governed and configured by the deploying organisation. Timings shown elsewhere in this prototype are generic and simulated.

Request / preference recorded

Patient has requested discussion of mode of birth.

Simulated example. Pathscription records and tracks the request; the clinical discussion and decision belong to the clinician and the patient.

Emotional wellbeing and recovery items are carried at handover in exactly the same way as physical care items. They do not disappear because the woman has physically stabilised or moved wards. All outstanding actions retain their timestamp, status, priority, reason, owner and history. Important work should survive handovers, shift changes and changes of team.
